These 3D pieces – each approximately 35x35x35cm, mixed media on paper and card with copper wire – started out as 2D collages, a continuation of the process of recycling collaborative murals from past workshops. At the suggestion of an artist friend, the flat pieces were each ‘twisted’ into 3D dance-like shapes hung on invisible thread from the ceiling. The shadows they cast are as beautiful as the objects themselves.
The collaborative murals that formed the basis of Geometric Sky Dancers were created by school children from 7 primary and secondary schools in South Devon, UK. This was a Helen Foundation-funded project connecting music and painting that culminated in a community exhibition and performance at Teignbridge Community College. The images below show the working process, from the children’s painting through to the finished 3D pieces.
