Words

Begun with art and film students and secondary school children

For those more at home with the language of the written word than abstract art, for Sara, the Words series is a hook-in to a new language.

The words in these 22cm x 22cm miniatures were taken from a collection of nine volumes of quotations Sara compiled in her late teens, early twenties. Many of the wisdoms gleaned from writings of favourite artists, composers, writers and philosophers still resonate.

Weaving her technique of mixed media collages on paper together with words printed onto acetate, the meaning of the text is enhanced by how they are arranged. The purely visual effect of the graphic marks of font and scribe play an equally important role in the overall composition of the pieces.

The Words series started out as 36 small squares cut from a seven square metre floor piece collaboratively created on thick paper by secondary school children and students of art. This was during Sara’s Tide Mark project as artist in residence at Arts University, Plymouth, UK.
